Ever asked a student a question and not received a response? Speech involves the intricate use of many muscles that are part of the vocal mechanism. Many special education students are working on training these muscles, some use the muscles appropriately but are working on social and cognitive skills, and some have vocal mechanisms that do not work in a typical fashion and therefore need the help of various devices. Every student, though, should have a means and the ability to communicate as effectively as possible, whether during work, class or recreation activities. So what does a Speech-Language Pathologist actually do? How can speech-language and physical education, both often related services in schools, blend for the benefit of the special education students? What are some ways that you can communicate more effectively with your students when the Speech-Language Pathologist is not around? Come get answers to those questions and work out your speech muscles with me!
