I will also have ideas for students who are blind as well as assorted other tips. I will show videos throughout the presentation.

ExerciseBuddy, a visual exercise system using an iPad, solves the difficult problem of introducing exercise to individuals with autism. Using established teaching strategies, visual supports and video-modeling, ExerciseBuddy inspires students without challenging the teachers. David Geslak, a former Fitness Coordinator at a school for individuals with autism and Ashley Palomino, a former Special Education Teacher at the Chicago Public Schools developed ExerciseBuddy. Interdisciplinary/Theme Teaching to Promote Inclusion in Physical Education and Recreation.
All teachers, facilitators, and leaders etc… need to ask the following questions: Who are we teaching? Why are we teaching what we are teaching? What does diversity indicate? How are we teaching and being a leader? What exactly is inclusion? How do we best educate the “Whole Child” and the “Individual Child”? How do we connect various disciplines in our teaching? Interdisciplinary education is a process in which two or more subject areas are integrated with the goal of fostering enhanced learning in each subject area. The disciplines may be related through a central theme, issue, problem, process, topic, or experience (Jacobs, 1989). Implementing an interdisciplinary program brings teachers together to create exciting learning experiences for students and to discover new ways of delivering the curriculum. The concept of interdisciplinary education acknowledges the integrity and uniqueness of each subject area, yet recognizes the interrelationships among subjects. Let's learn to promote Inclusion as a process and not a placement and add some fun disciplines to our teaching to bring out all the ability levels of the children we teach!

Working Out the Speech Muscles: DAPE/SLP Working Together for Success!
Ever asked a student a question and not received a response? Speech involves the intricate use of many muscles that are part of the vocal mechanism. Many special education students are working on training these muscles, some use the muscles appropriately but are working on social and cognitive skills, and some have vocal mechanisms that do not work in a typical fashion and therefore need the help of various devices. Every student, though, should have a means and the ability to communicate as effectively as possible, whether during work, class or recreation activities. So what does a Speech-Language Pathologist actually do? How can speech-language and physical education, both often related services in schools, blend for the benefit of the special education students? What are some ways that you can communicate more effectively with your students when the Speech-Language Pathologist is not around? Come get answers to those questions and work out your speech muscles with me!
